For exf f., Chilean filmmaker Jeannette Muñoz has put together a program of two of her film projects: Puchuncaví and Envíos. Puchuncaví is a film that has been growing steadily since 2014. In this work, Muñoz looks at a specific place, its people and landscape at irregular intervals: “Puchuncaví, an area located at the Pacific coast northwest to Santiago de Chile, is a native american site: It was the southern terminal of the Inca road system. Puchuncaví originally derives from Mapudungún and reads as something like 'where fiestas abound', referring to the tradition of the native fiestas. The uncontrolled industrial development of the area that includes copper refineries, steam power plants and a lading port has destroyed the conditions for life in dignity: It has become one of the sacrificed areas in Chile where the inhabitants keep living in marginalized and unhealthy conditions. (…) The fragments follow one another like unrelated heterogeneous and contradictory strata that render the multiplicity of a complex network of realities perceived and revealed only while wandering aimlessly through Puchuncaví.” (Jeannette Muñoz)
Envíos, on the other hand, is a film series that Muñoz began in 2005. It consists of 16mm films that the filmmaker sends as letters and gifts to various people dear to her. The subject matter of the individual Envíos is different, but they are linked by a special feeling for rhythm, light and movement when working with the Bolex.
“The first time Jeannette Muñoz showed me one of her films – at the very beginning, when she had just decided to make films after being an artist working with photography for some time – I was very impressed by her unconventional camera movements. Her intuitive approach revealed everything that she was interested in. I immediately understood her impulse for a particular camera movement, her instinct for a certain image, and this is a rare blessing. Our (filmmakers’) friendship started at that moment. Jeannette shares her feelings with a rigor that gives her films a singular fragility. They stand for themselves; no calculation here, no formal concept. They come to life as soon as we watch them.” (Ute Aurand)
